Tarot decks can share familiar card names while using different pictures and interpretive systems. Rider–Waite–Smith, Marseille and Thoth are useful names to recognise when comparing decks or reading a guidebook.
Looking at the details
Rider–Waite–Smith is widely known for illustrated scenes on its numbered Minor Arcana. Many Marseille-style decks use arrangements of suit symbols on those cards. Thoth has its own artwork, terminology and correspondences, including some different card names.
Trying a reflective approach
Look through sample cards rather than choosing only from a box cover. Notice whether you prefer a pictured scene, a pattern of objects or a more abstract composition. Check that the accompanying guide explains the system used.
Keeping the interpretation open
A meaning written for one tradition may not transfer neatly to another. Start with your deck’s own guide, then compare other interpretations as alternatives. These are artistic and symbolic systems, not tests of predictive accuracy.
