A tarot spread is an arrangement of cards in which positions may have assigned meanings. A position might refer to a topic, a perspective or something to consider. The layout gives a structure to the conversation rather than changing the physical cards.
A neutral three-position example
An illustrative layout could use three positions: the situation being discussed, another perspective and a question to explore. The reader interprets each card in relation to its position. This example is a reflective layout, not a method of verifying facts or predicting events.
Position and card together
The same card can be discussed differently when placed under different headings. A card in a position about communication may prompt a different explanation from the same card in a position about priorities. The role of the position should be stated clearly.
Named and flexible layouts
Some spreads have established names and arrangements, while others are created for a particular conversation. More cards do not necessarily mean more reliable information. Understanding the headings and their purpose is more useful than assuming that a complicated layout must give a stronger reading.
