Natural crystals can be sold in several finishes. Raw, tumbled and polished describe the appearance or processing of a piece, rather than three different categories of origin. A naturally occurring material can still be cut, shaped or polished before sale.
What does raw mean?
Raw usually describes material presented with relatively little shaping. A piece may retain irregular surfaces or visible crystal faces. The word is used loosely in retail descriptions, so it is worth asking whether any cutting, cleaning or other treatment has taken place.
How does tumbling differ from polishing?
Tumbling is a processing method in which pieces move in a container with abrasive material to smooth their surfaces. Polishing is the broader description of producing a finished surface; it can follow tumbling or be applied to a cut or carved object.
Which details belong on a product description?
Look separately at material, origin, treatments, size and finish. A smooth surface does not establish whether a stone is natural, synthetic or an imitation. Finish also does not establish a spiritual quality. Photographs and measurements can help clarify what the item actually looks like.
