A crystal, a mineral and a gemstone are related terms, but they describe different things. Crystal refers to an ordered structure. Mineral refers to a naturally occurring substance with defined characteristics. Gemstone describes material used for its appearance in jewellery or decorative objects.
Crystal structure
A material can have a crystal structure even when its outside does not form a neat pointed shape. A polished stone may still be crystalline. The smooth outline made by cutting or polishing should be distinguished from the internal arrangement that the term describes.
Minerals and rocks
Quartz is a mineral. A rock can contain one or more minerals together. The name of a decorative stone therefore does not always identify one single mineral species. Product descriptions can also use trade names that differ from geological terminology.
Gemstones and everyday language
Many gemstones are minerals, but gemstone is a use-based description rather than one mineral category. In spiritual shops, crystal may be used broadly for polished stones and other objects. Reading the material name separately from its spiritual description keeps the physical information clear.
