What Is Mantra Meditation?

Mantra meditation uses the repetition of a sound, word or phrase as a focus for attention. The repetition may be spoken, whispered or silent, depending on the tradition and instructions. It differs from practices that place their main focus on movement, surrounding sounds or bodily sensations.

Meaning and background

Some mantras belong to particular religious or spiritual traditions. Their meaning, pronunciation and use should be understood in that context. Other meditation exercises use an ordinary word or short phrase without presenting it as a traditional sacred mantra.

How repetition is used

A teacher might invite participants to repeat a phrase at a steady, comfortable pace. If attention moves to another thought, they return to the next repetition. There is no need to force the voice, hold the breath or make the phrase sound a particular way.

Mantras and affirmations

An affirmation is usually a statement someone chooses to express a belief or intention. A mantra has its own context and may not serve that purpose. The terms can overlap in everyday language, so it is useful to read how a recording or teacher defines them.
