What Does Psychometry Mean in Psychic Practice?

Psychometry, in psychic practice, refers to interpreting impressions associated with an object. A practitioner might hold jewellery or another personal item and describe images, thoughts or feelings they believe relate to its owner or history. This is a spiritual interpretation, not a verified record of the object's past.

Objects and ordinary information

An object can also provide visible clues through its design, wear, inscription or materials. These ordinary observations should be distinguished from impressions described as psychic. A conclusion based on an engraved date, for example, is different from a claim that the object conveyed information.

Different uses of the word

Psychometry should not be confused with psychometrics, which concerns psychological measurement and assessment. Similar wording does not mean the practices share a method or evidential basis. Reading the surrounding description helps establish which subject is being discussed.

Personal items and consent

An object may carry personal significance for its owner. It should only be handled or discussed with permission. Explaining psychometry does not mean encouraging someone to surrender a valuable possession or accept an interpretation about another person's private life.
