What Does a Tarot Card Number Represent?

A tarot card number can identify its place in a deck and provide a starting point for symbolic interpretation. These are separate uses. The printed number belongs to the deck’s organisation; any meaning attached to it depends on the reader or guidebook.

How are the major cards numbered?

In many familiar tarot decks, the major arcana include numbered cards and the Fool, commonly shown as zero. Some traditions place particular cards differently. Checking the deck’s guide avoids assuming that numbering is identical across every deck.

What happens in the minor suits?

The numbered cards in a typical minor suit run from Ace to Ten. Court cards use titles such as Page or Queen instead. A number can therefore refer to a suit card or a major card, depending on the context.

How does interpretation use numbers?

Some readers connect numbers with themes such as beginnings, repetition or completion. Those associations are interpretive conventions rather than factual predictions. Look at the number alongside the suit, artwork and spread position, and ask which system the reader is using.
