Moonrise: Why Does the Moon Appear at Different Times Each Day?

Moonrise is the time the Moon crosses your local horizon. It changes from day to day because the Moon moves around Earth while Earth rotates. Your observing location also affects the time.

The distinction to notice

The Moon is not only a night-time object. Depending on its phase and position, it can be visible in daylight. Buildings, hills, cloud and the brightness of the sky can make the first visible sighting different from a published horizon time.

Checking the context

Use a location-based astronomy calendar and check its time zone. A moonrise time for another city is not necessarily the right one for Bedford. The interval between successive moonrises also varies.

Your own observations

For an observation journal, record the date, place, direction and weather. This gives you something concrete to compare over several evenings without attaching predictions or personal outcomes to the time of moonrise.
