A singing bowl is a vessel-shaped instrument, while a gong is generally a suspended metal disc. Both produce sound through vibration, but their construction and playing techniques differ. Neither name describes one fixed sound shared by every instrument.
How they are played
A gong is commonly struck with a mallet and may also be played using other techniques. A singing bowl can be struck or rubbed around its rim. The performer can change the sound through the tool used, the point of contact and the way the instrument is played.
What a listener hears
Pitch, tone, volume and the length of the sound depend on the particular instrument and performance. A large instrument is not automatically played loudly, and a small bowl is not automatically quiet. Recordings may also change how the sound is heard.
Use within an event
A sound-based event may feature gongs, bowls or a mixture of instruments. A programme should identify what is included rather than treating every sound bath as the same. This comparison concerns instrument characteristics, without describing either instrument as more healing or spiritually effective.
