Astrology for beginners often starts with a circular chart covered in unfamiliar marks. A useful first step is to recognise the different kinds of symbols before trying to combine them into a personal interpretation.
Understanding the terminology
A birth chart commonly includes zodiac signs, planets, numbered houses and lines representing aspects. These belong to a symbolic astrological system. They are not the same thing as a photograph of the sky or a scientific personality assessment.
Reading it in context
Read the chart legend and identify one layer at a time. First find the sign symbols, then the planet symbols, then the house divisions. Different chart styles and house systems can arrange information differently.
A question to take away
Keep a small glossary rather than trying to memorise the entire wheel. When discussing a chart, ask which tradition and settings are being used. An illustration in a blog header is decorative and is not your own calculated birth chart.
